Playa Hermosa
Playa Hermosa is a coastal community located in the district of Cóbano, on the Nicoya Peninsula of Costa Rica.
Historically connected to nearby rural settlements such as San Martín, the area developed as a small coastal village shaped by agriculture, fishing, and strong ties to the surrounding forests and ocean.
Over time, Playa Hermosa became known for its natural beauty, consistent surf, and extensive coastal ecosystems that include forests, wetlands, rivers, and marine environments. Large portions of the surrounding land are designated as Patrimonio Natural del Estado (State Natural Heritage), reflecting the ecological importance of the area within the Nicoya Peninsula.
In the past two decades, Hermosa has experienced significant growth driven by tourism, migration, and real estate development in the broader Santa Teresa–Mal País–Hermosa region.
This transformation has brought new opportunities as well as new pressures on natural resources, infrastructure, and community cohesion.
Today, Playa Hermosa is a diverse and evolving community where residents, newcomers, and visitors share a unique territory defined by its natural systems, surf culture, and strong connection to the surrounding landscape.
Hermosa is PNE,
What is it?
Hermosa and the State Natural Heritage (PNE)
Playa Hermosa contains approximately 36 hectares of land designated as Patrimonio Natural del Estado (State Natural Heritage – PNE) under Costa Rican law. These public lands include coastal forests, wetlands, and habitats that support a rich diversity of wildlife.
Having such a large area of protected public land within a coastal community is unusual and represents an important ecological asset for the Nicoya Peninsula. Because these lands belong to the nation, they cannot be privately developed and must be conserved for the benefit of present and future generations.
Protecting these ecosystems helps maintain biodiversity, safeguard water systems, and preserve the natural character that defines Hermosa.

Playa Hermosa today
Today, Playa Hermosa is a small coastal community located in the district of Cóbano on Costa Rica’s Nicoya Peninsula. Over the past two decades, the area has experienced significant growth as tourism, migration, and investment have expanded throughout the Santa Teresa–Mal País–Hermosa corridor.
While Hermosa retains a rural and nature-based character, it is now home to a diverse population that includes long-time Costa Rican families, international residents, seasonal visitors, and local businesses connected to surf culture and nature-based tourism.
As the community grows, Hermosa faces increasing pressures related to infrastructure, mobility, access to shared public spaces, and the protection of the natural systems that sustain life in the territory. These changes make community organization, responsible development, and thoughtful territorial planning essential to ensuring that Hermosa continues to thrive while maintaining the qualities that define it.
